Hearing

In association with the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the doctors and staff of Connecticut Eye Consultants (formerly Danbury Eye Physicians & Surgeons and Greater Waterbury Laser Eye Physicians) want to remind you of the importance of scheduling annual hearing exams especially as it pertains to your overall health and safety.

For years, Connecticut Eye Consultants has provided comprehensive, state-of-the-art eye care services to the community. Our commitment to quality patient care has led us to expand our services to another important sense in your life – hearing.

Two of our most important senses are vision and hearing.  Ears convert sound into electrical signals which are delivered to the brain for processing.  When the signal is weak, the brain also eventually becomes weak in it’s ability to interpret or process sound.

Why do we need to hear at appropriate volume levels? Our brains need this stimulation to keep us safe; our eyes are forward facing but our ears function as a 360-degree early warning system.  The greater the hearing impairment, the closer sound needs to be in order for us to detect it giving us less reaction time.

Hearing our footsteps helps with balance.  Those with even a mild hearing loss are up to three times more likely to experience a fall, and that risk increases with every 10 decibels of loss.  A few other side effects of hearing loss are impaired memory, anxiety, social withdrawal and depression, and increased risk of developing dementia.  There is no appropriate age where is does not matter if we hear correctly.  Whether we are one or one hundred and one, our hearing connects us to people and important sound information for better safety, memory, and balance.

If you are 50 years old or older, a baseline hearing evaluation is recommended and is essential for lifetime cognitive wellness.

At Connecticut Eye Consultants, we are advocates for staying healthy – especially when it comes to the health of our senses! Save your hearing through early diagnosis and treatment.
