Stephen J. Zuckerman, MD, FAAO, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a fellowship-trained corneal surgeon specializing in corneal disease, cataracts, and laser refractive surgery. He was one of the first doctors in the United States to perform PRK and LASIK eye surgery when it emerged more than 25 years ago.

A Pioneer in Excimer Laser Surgery

In 1993, Dr. Zuckerman was involved in clinical trials of the new Excimer Laser for vision correction. At that time, the laser was considered investigational, and only 10 academic medical centers in the United States were authorized to offer this surgery. Dr. Zuckerman spent a full year treating patients with laser-correction techniques and providing data to the FDA, which contributed to the approval of this cutting-edge technology for general use.

As a specialist in cataract surgery and corneal disease, Dr. Zuckerman also has extensive experience in other state-of-the-art techniques, including corneal transplants using penetrating keratoplasty (PK) and descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK); pterygium excision; and astigmatic keratotomy (AK). He has trained many other surgeons in these techniques, and lectures on them nationally and internationally.

A Distinguished Doctor

Dr. Zuckerman received his Doctorate of Medicine from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York with top academic honors, including induction into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha (AΩA) Honors Medical Society. He was also awarded the Guttmacher Prize and the George James Award. He later distinguished himself as ophthalmology Resident of the Year while completing his training in eye surgery at Boston University Medical Center. He then accepted a fellowship in corneal surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York.

As a board-certified surgeon and diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology, he has been granted memberships in several professional societies, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS), the Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians (CSEP), the Connecticut State Medical Society (CSMS), the Fairfield County Medical Association (FCMA), and the Danbury Medical Society (DMS). He has been published in ophthalmic and medical literature.

Dr. Zuckerman has been a partner at Connecticut Eye Consultants since 1994, and sees patients in our Danbury and New Milford offices. He resides in Redding, Connecticut, with his family.
