What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the United States, especially for older people. But the loss of sight from glaucoma is preventable if you get treatment early enough. Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve. The optic nerve carries the images we see to the brain. Many people know that glaucoma has something to do with the pressure inside the eye. The higher the pressure inside the eye, the greater the chance of damage to the optic nerve. Early detection and treatment by your ophthalmologist are the keys to preventing optic nerve damage and blindness from glaucoma.

Glaucoma Treatment

SLT – Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty

We offer Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, which is a widely accepted laser treatment option in glaucoma treatment. The laser procedure is performed in the office and usually takes about 5 minutes. It is extremely well tolerated. SLT actually lowers (IOP) intraocular pressure by creating relatively small pulsing low-energy laser light to target cells in the drainage system of the eye.

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery – MIGS

At Connecticut Eye Consultants, our glaucoma specialists continue to offer the latest in glaucoma management & surgical techniques, including Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery or MIGS. We are proud to be performing these less invasive and safer procedures, frequently performed at the time of cataract surgery in hopes of making one less dependent on glaucoma drops

Glaucoma continues to be one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness in the United States. It is actually a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve in the back of the eye, often due to increased intraocular pressure (IOP). Early stages of glaucoma typically have no symptoms, making regular eye exams crucial for early detection and treatment.

While there’s no cure, timely intervention and proper treatment can significantly slow progression and help preserve your vision. In the past, treatments included medications, laser therapy, and surgery, all aimed at lowering IOP to prevent further optic nerve damage.

Today, Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) has truly revolutionized the treatment of glaucoma. Unlike traditional glaucoma surgeries, MIGS involves smaller incisions and less tissue manipulation, leading to fewer complications and faster healing.

Our glaucoma specialists here at Connecticut Eye Consultants are among the most experienced MIGS surgeons in the region. One of the chief benefits of MIGS is its ability to be combined with cataract surgery, thus avoiding a second trip to the operating room.

Our surgeons have experience with multiple MIGS devices and can tailer a surgical plan best suited to a patient’s specific needs. By lowering the IOP and reducing the dependency on daily medications, these procedures can improve a patient’s quality of life. As technology advances, MIGS will continue to play a vital role in glaucoma management and the doctors at Connecticut Eye Consultants will continue to offer the latest in MIGS technology.
