As we begin the visually appropriate year of 2020, it is important to understand the significance of early diagnosis and treatment when it comes to protecting your vision from common eye diseases like Glaucoma, Cataracts and Diabetes-related eye condition.

With that thought in mind, January 2020 is National Glaucoma Awareness Month and is the perfect time to include your eye health as a part of your New Year’s resolutions! Therefore we are encouraging everyone above age 50 – anyone with a history of Glaucoma or Diabetes in your family – to schedule a comprehensive eye evaluation this month at one of our convenient Connecticut Eye Consultant locations.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a disease caused by a buildup of fluid in the eye and subsequent elevated pressure that harms the optic nerve and stands as the leading cause of irreversible blindness around the world. Over 3 million Americans have glaucoma, however, it is said that half of them don’t know they have it.

What are the symptoms?

This sight-stealing disease is painless, thus it often goes undetected. That’s also why it is often referred to as ‘The Sneak Thief of Sight.’ As vision loss progresses slowly, the condition may not be noticed until the disease has largely progressed. And once it has progressed to a certain stage, irreversible vision loss can occur. This makes your regular eye exams with us the most important step in catching signs of glaucoma early.

Are you at risk?

Some people are at higher risk of getting glaucoma, including those of African, Asian, and Hispanic descent. Other risk factors include a family history of glaucoma, race, and older age.

Raise Awareness!

Start a discussion with your family members and friends about the risks of glaucoma. Let them know you are taking preventative measures to ensure healthy vision in 2020!

The only way to make sure this is a year of healthy eyes for you is to schedule an exam with your ophthalmologist. Only an eye doctor can measure eye pressure, conduct a glaucoma exam, and determine the appropriate treatments for you.

At Connecticut Eye Consultants, we are aware of the increased risk of glaucoma. So this month we have set aside times for our patients to come in for a comprehensive exam, discuss further recommendations, and be proactive about glaucoma.

Don’t be blindsided by glaucoma in 2020. Comprehensive evaluations are covered under most insurance plans, so save your vision through early diagnosis and treatment. Call our offices today at (203) 791-2020 to schedule your evaluation!
